Swelling: Other than a sprained ankle, reasons could be gout, infection, arthritis, tendon tear, ligament tear, instability to ankle, defect to ankle joint cartilage, foreign body in joint, stress fracture, fracture, hypertension, kidney disease, charcot arthropathy, etc. Good luck.
