Lip cancer: It depends on what kind of cancer it is. The most common forms of cancer on the skin of the lip are squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas. Early stage lip cancer is treated by surgery to remove the tumor and a band of normal adjacent tissue. This may require a reconstructive procedure to restore the lip to normal function but may leave a cosmetic issue. Radiation treatment may be indicated also.

Surgery: Labial squamous cell or basal cell carcinoma is best treated with excision followed by laser ablation of the adjacent tissue. The lips lend to excellent cosmetic results post surgery. In fact, up to 1/3 may be removed without a significant change in appearance once healing has occurred.
