A member asked:

What is the death rate of rubella now, and what was it in the pre-vaccine days?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rarely fatl pre/post: Rubella is a rather minor illness in most patients with 25-50% remaining asymptomatic. Rarely infections of the heart muscle or encephalitis were quite worrisome. Incidence has declined 99% with vaccines. The problem with rubella is with pregnancy. If acquired in pregnancy: miscarriage, blindness, deafness, liver failure, heart disease & mental retardation were often the tragic result.
