Several steps: First, you need to have a pregnancy test to determine if you are pregnant. Second, you need to have symptoms consistent with an ectopic pregnancy, including pain or bleeding. Third, your physician will examine you to determine if you have signs of pregnancy in an abnormal location. Fourth, a blood marker of pregnancy (HCG) will rise too slowly. Fifth, an ultrasound may show tubal swelling.
