Can be hard: Munchausen syndrome and its child variant, munhcausen's by proxy, are self-induced "disorders" that patients or parents of patients deliberately induce to gain medical attention. Depending on the sophistication of the individual, recognition can be challenging, because typically the individuals seem cooperative and grateful for the care--until caught! one looks for unusual presentations.
