Tonsilloliths: These are likely tonsilloliths (tonsil stones). The tonsils have crevices where bacteria and sloughed cells collect. Your description is very typical of these annoying little things. By using a water pik, you can knock them loose. Getting a tonsillectomy is a last resort.
