Usually not: Unless there is pain associated with activities there is no reason for any surgical treatment. Most important is wearing appropriate footwear that allows enough space for your foot.

NO: Virtually all orthopaedic conditions (including bunions) are best left alone if asymptommatic. Treatment should be considered if the pain or functional limitations are unacceptable.

Yes: Bunions are progressive structural deformities. They will gradually get worse over time. Yes, in the case, means good shoes and supports. The better you can protect and support the foot, the less wear and tear on the foot. Better to be proactive than reactive. Dr l.

Usually not, but...: Diabetics who may have little or no sensation in their feet may not have the protective mechanism of pain to alert them that there is something wrong. In such people, if the bunion is causing other symptoms such as bruising, blistering, or ulceration, surgical management may be warranted despite the lack of pain in order to prevent future problems.
