Death if no function: The kidneys and liver are essential to survival. A person cannot live if these organs have no function. For kidney failure, the patient can go on dialysis and may live for many years. For complete liver failure, the only therapy is a liver transplant. However, the wait time for a liver transplant can be months or years, so the patient must have some residual function to stay alive until transplant.
