Depends: A ruptured appendix is often a surgical problem. When a patient presents and the appendix has already ruptured and formed an abscess, we will drain the abscess and remove the appendix at a later date once the acute inflammation has died down. A persistent leak from the appendix can cause a fistula and several factors impact the ability of this to close without surgery.
