KOH, yes.: Standard aa batteries are alkaline batteries, and can leak a caustic chemical called potassium hydroxide (koh). This can cause burns and is an irritant of the eyes, nose and mouth. Rechargable aa batteries (e.g. Nimh) do not contain this chemical, but may vent hydrogen and rupture.
