Talk with the doctor: Because a total bilirubin level of 14-15 can be normal in a 6 day old, a parent can talk with the doctor about whether or not treatment is needed. Light phototherapy is used when a baby is at higher risk of jaundice-related problems; such as if a baby was premature, had an infection or bad illness, had a blood group mismatch and was breaking down too many blood cells, has a diabetic mother, etc...
