Could be breathing: Pattern is dysfunctional. That's common with panic. A relaxed, abdominal breathing pattern rather than a shallow or upper chest breathing pattern is healthy. Find a biofeedback therapist who can teach you healthy breathing and other relaxation skills -- www.Bcia.Org or www.Aapb.Org. Respiratory biofeedback using a capnometer to measure your breathing physiology would be particularly helpful.

Yes it could: It's a typical anxiety/panic symptom. A full workup, if indicated, would include a chest x-ray, pulse oximetry and possibly a bnp, tsh, cbc, and possibly pulmonary function tests.

Anxiety: Anxiety itself could cause these symptoms, and could be "long term." panic attacks by definition are limited in time, peaking in a few minutes and usually dissipating within 30 minutes. If your ongoing state is an anxious one, you could certainly have manifestations like this. Anxiety conditions are like an umbrella, covering multiple types. Panic is only one type of anxiety. There is help!
