Pleurisy: Sharp pain while taking deep breaths could be pleurisy. Basically an inflammation around the linings of the lungs. When taking deep breaths, they rub against each other causing pain. There are many causes of this. However, it would be concerning if you are severely short of breath, coughing up blood, having chest pain, etc. If it is causing a lot of discomfort, have your doctor evaluate you.
