Vertical black line: Finger & toe nails are very specialized keratin that is laid down in layers. These layers can separate and fray starting at the end. The vertical black line that does not go away - does not grow out? Have you had this many years? Do you have other nails the same way? Are you african american (more common). If this line is fairly young it should be seen as it can be melanoma.
