A doctor has provided 1 answer

Autoimmune disorder: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder of the pancreas, whereby the islet cells that produce Insulin have been destroyed, so that very little Insulin is produced. As a result, patients can develop ketoacidosis associated with high blood sugars. Treatment with Insulin is required (they are "insulin dependent").
