Ingrown toenail: A nail becomes ingrown when one or both borders become incurvated and grow downward on one or the other side (or both sides) of the nail plate. As the nail border keeps growing downward, the ingrown nail causes pain and may become infected. An ingrown nail (onychocryptosis) may be the condition itself, or the toe infection (onychia) the ingrown nail is causing.

Onychocryptosis: Onychocryptosis is the medical name for ingrown toe nail. The nail can be flat or curved and still be ingrown. The margin of the nail impinges into the flesh (nail fold) on either side of the nail or even the end of the nail. This can lead to violation of the skin (paronychia) and open you up to infections. These are painful and can easily be treated by your local podiatrist.
