Is the stringy stuff in your eyes from allergies or dry eye?

Depends: If you have mucous build-up, many times it is from poor clearance of debris on your eye surface, a result of dry eyes. However, many other conditions can lead to discharge or mattering, including infections. Allergies typically do not lead to discharge if any type.

Eye mucous: Mucous from your eyes can be caused by either allergies or dry eyes. You can try some over the counter artificial tears on a regular basis for several days to see if this helps your symptoms. If you're having more problems, then discuss this with your ophthalmologist.

Can be both: It can be from both. See your ophthalmologist who can give you options to help resolve the problem. You can also try artificial tears over the counter (without the preservative bak or benzalkonium chloride) or an allergy drop with ketotifen as the active ingredient. Stay away from visine or clear eyes.
