Typically 24 hrs: If you know this is new onset atrial fibrillation, typically clot forms in 24 hrs. If pt is high risk pt ( h/o htn, dm, age more than 75 , h/o heart failure and h/o stroke or ministroke), you really have to be sure about duration of atrial fibrillation.( unless there are on monitor we are never sure about their duration of a fib).

Varies : Patients with atrial fibrillation might have had it off and on for quite some time before it's diagnosed. It is therefore very difficult to say when blood clots form.
