IV fluid: Fluid is given through an "IV" (a little tube inserted into a vein) for many reasons: to treat dehydration, to give medicines, & to maintain fluid balance when patients aren't drinking. In some patients if too much fluid is given too quickly it can cause problems including with the lungs. For a detailed review of a particular patient problem, ask a doctor through an inbox consult on HealthTap.
