Depends...: Scapholunate ligaments typically tear; however a sprain can occur. Because the normal alignment of your carpal bones has changed you may always notice a difference in the size of your wrist. You should notice a decrease in the swelling if you keep your wrist immobilized within a few weeks of injury. If swelling or pain persists, following up with your hand surgeon is imperitive.
