Alcohol metabolism: Some people, especially asians, have lower concentrations of the liver enzyme which detoxifies and breaks down ethanol when they drink, known as alcohol dehydrogenase. As a result, they may experience facial flushing after drinking, which others might not. I am not sure why you have discomfort in your side, but if it is over the lower right side of the rib cage, it may pertain to the liver.
