A member asked:

Is it better to use ice or warm compress for a tooth abcess?

Ice: If you have a tooth abscess, a warm compress will allow the abscess to continue to spread, and this can get dangerous if it goes into the fascia (the layer between bone and muscle). An ice pack can make the abscess more viscous and so, less likely to spread. See a dentist or endodontist as soon as you can to take care of the cause of the abscess.

Abcess: Moist heat applied to the area of the swelling from an abscess will help to consolidate the infection. Just a 10 degre raise intemperature is needed. Ice is recommended after an extraction to prevent imflammation and pain.
