Is it okay to give my 3 year old melatonin?

Kids&melatonin: If your 3 year old has trouble falling asleep then you should talk to your pediatrician as he/she may be able to guide you for better sleep hygiene. Babies should have routines and should have no distractions during bedtime. No tv for 1 hour before bedtime and no feeding in the night of course. I would not recommend melatonin unless his doctor has evaluated & established a problem.

Not recommended: I don't recommend melatonin at all. I have many patients who use it though. They report different results, some good and others say it is of no help. If you are looking for a sleep agent, i would use something much safer that has stood the test of time in children. That is benadryl (diphenhydramine). Here is a dosing chart. http://ramseypediatric.com/pediatrics-blog/benadryl (diphenhydramine)-dosing/.
