Blood tests: Typically all that is needed to diagnose hypothyroidism is simple blood tests. Generally that means testing for the amount of thyroid hormone in the blood (t4) as well as the stimulating hormone (tsh). One expects to see a pattern of low T4 and high TSH in hypothyroidism. Occasionally other tests need to be done to confirm hypothyroidism.

Thyroid function: Tests generally include: thyroid hormones - either ft4 or T4 and tsh. Additionally, it's important to determine the cause because of possible need of treatment. Anti-thyroid antibodies should be checked as well.
