Yes: I would worry about viral gastroenteritis, food poisoning, amebiasis or other parasitic infection. Is anyone else around ill? If he's not better in 24 hours, or if he has fever or blood in the stool, he needs to see a doctor. Meanwhile be sure he's drinking plenty of clear liquids.

Maybe: Most vomiting in an 8 year old is accompanied eventually by diarrhea. It may be up to 1-2 days after the vomiting. If it is repeated vomiting without diarrhea, then causes such as strep throat and appendicitis would be more likely.
