ASIA scoring: It depends on your asia score. This will include whether or not you have rectal sensation or tone, which would define a complete verse incomplete lesion. If you have a true complete injury, then you may gain a single level, but otherwise the paralysis is normally permanent. If you have partial sparing below the injury, it may not be permanent. Most gains in first three months, then up to 1yr.

Nerve Injury : The spinal cord usually ends at l1-l2. Below this level, only nerves are in the spinal canal. Depending on how much injury occurred, a nerve has more potential to recover than the spinal cord. Nerves of the leg have a better chance of recovery than the nerves controlling bowel and bladder function. Decompression of the nerves with surgery if indicated, gives the best environment for recovery.
