Uremia vs. Dementia: If your mother's kidneys aren't clearing the toxic substances properly(uremia) she will be confused much like dementia. A urologist can check her blood BUN & creatinine values and find a way to completely treat the uti's with suppression agents and note the cause(s) of her incontinence. Dementia will require a neurologist evaluation.

UTIs may or may not: Be the real problem. Over diagnosis and over treatment are not uncommon. Your mom should be carefully evaluated by a urogyn or urologist or geriatrician. Many things can cause confusion in an 88 year old.
