Depends on variables: Most kids are not given anything by mouth within 4-8 hours of surgery.If needed for some reason just prior to surgery it would be given iv. If your question involves the days leading up to surgery, it is ok to use.

Talk to your MD: Your anesthesiologist will wan to know what medications your child has taken. The problem with the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is that the medication can interact with some of the agents we use and prolong their action. I would try and avoid it if you can.
