Does ibs cause osteopenia?

Any colonic: Inflammation can lead to malabsorption of calcium, protein, and vitamin d -- which can lead to poor bone formation and increased bone resorption -- resulting in less bone or osteopenia.

Not directly ...: Osteopenia is a reduction in the mineral content of bone. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is probably caused by gut hypersensitivty. Increased gut transit time has been measured in people with IBS, however it is not clear whether this affects absorption of minerals needed for bone growth. More likely causes are dietary restriction, or the use of Proton Pump Inhibitors which can alter mineral absorption
