Broken toe: The standard approach to manage a broken toe is buddy taping. The swelling of surrounding toe is exoected. Try staying off your foot and keep it elevated.

Swelling: It is normal for swelling to extend into the foot with this type of injury should improve with time. In regards to using or not using crutches for this injury will usually depend on you discomfort. Some times a hard stiff soled showe or wooden shoe is used to limit pain and motion of the toe when walking.

Broken Toe: Swelling is very normal after an injury like this. Crutches are not necessary. I would recommend a loose fitting shoe, buddy splinting, and elevation. It will take about 6 weeks to have the swelling reduce.
