Patient Preparation: You can't eat or drink anything at least 4-6 hours before the scan, but not more than 24 hour so it's best to schedule your test early in the morning. Keep your doctor informed about any medications you are taking. Usually, all opiate type pain medications (morphine, codeine, etc) have to be stopped 6 hours before the test. You may take your other medications with a sip of water.

Fast for 4hrs before: The prep for a hida is to not eat for 4 hrs before the study, but we do not want you to fast more than 24 hrs. Pain pills 5 days before the study should not be a problem. However if you take narcotics the day of the study it could affect the ability of the gallbladder to empty quickly into the bowel.

Medications...: If you are taking a narcotic or opioid medication, you want to stop it at least 4 half lives before the scan. Opiates can have effects on the smooth muscle of the biliary tree and gallbladder. Specifically, opiates can cause contraction of the sphincter of oddi. This means that you could get a false positive result for common bile duct obstruction.
