What is the difference between an orthoscopic surgery for a knee meniscus and a repair?

Repair Meniscus: When a meniscus tear requires surgery, there are two types: meniscal repair or meniscal resection. Resection means "removal" and repair means that no mensicus is removed, rather the tear is sewn back together. Your surgeon makes the decision based on the tear pattern, age and location of tear, etc. The two procedures have very different recovery times with the repair often taking 3x longer.

Repair vs removal: Both procedures are completed arthroscopically through small, fingernail sized incisions. You may have a meniscus repair or a partial menisectomy (removal). The repair is ideal, if possible, for preventing arthritic changes, but requires a longer recovery time. In either case recovery is relatively quick. Post-op rehab will concentrate on motion, & quad strength. Discuss options with your surgeon!
