Why do i need a brain and orbit mri if i've not had optic neuritis and my last brain and spine mri was ok? what are they looking for?

Progression: I am assuming you are dealing with ms? If you are, then the MRI is likely to monitor progression of lesions. If you did not have any lesions prior then they may be looking for new lesions that could suggest changes in disease progression or a lack of new lesions defining response to certain treatments. While i cannot say for sure without knowing more, that would be a normal course of action.

Many things: An MRI of brain and orbits may be indicated if your doctor noticed a new finding on his physical exam. It would help in the diagnosis of new lesions or help in the prognosis of your condition which would ultimately affect the treatment that your doctor will provide.
