Once and Yes: The ovary releases an egg (ovulation) a few weeks before your period (menstruation). The uterus prepares itself for the fertilized egg by forming a specialized lining on its inner surface. If no sperm reaches the egg then the uterus sloughs its inner lining (your period) and the whole process starts again. Ovulation and menstruation occur in sequence each month and are inextricably intertwined.
