A member asked:

Mom has ct for abdomen they gave her 2 prep kit to take one before bed the other tomorr my question can she take regular meds (hbp, diabeties) b4 test?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: Patients on oral diabetic medicine should withhold there medication if they are given IV contrast until they have their renal function evaluated after they have the exam. Usually the next day. Diabetic meds (not insulin) are cleared by the kidneys. Poor renal function can cause a dangerous accumulation of med level in their blood. Bp meds should be continued as usual.
