What happened to vaginal infections before antibiotics were invented?

Home made remedies: Bacterial vaginal infections should be the only ones treated with antibiotics and not fungal infections. "in the olden days" women used various "home products" that were often ineffective( such as douches) and sometimes made the problem significantly worse.

Don't know: It is likely there were fewer vaginal infections before antibiotics. Women knew herbal cures then and they were passed down generation to generation.
