Do it yourself: Keep fit (exercise regularly). Lose weight. Use proper body mechanics. Take over the counter medications sparingly. Heat and or ice can work well. Stop smoking (good advice in any situation also). If you develop weakness in one or both legs despite doing things correctly or especially you develop loss of urine and/or bowel control, you need medical attention.

Stretching: Sciatica is the irritation of the nerves of the lumbar spine that causes radiating back pain down your leg. If you have just pain into the buttocks, that is not sciatica. Either way, try ice/heat, otc ibuprofen-type products, and low back stretching exercises to work those areas. Knee to chest, rotational stretching, runners stretching, can all help. If not seek med eval.

Stretching: Many times acute sciatic pain will resolves after stretching the area abit. The muscles will loosen up and help resolve pain. If not, then consider further imaging studies to see which exact nerve in your spine is getting pinched for further treatment options.
