Motion: With decreased muscle tone after the stroke and the arm / hand below your heart, swelling in inevitable. Arteries have their own tiny muscles in the wall of the artery but veins do not. Veins rely on motion of the muscles around them to help push the blood back to your heart. The solution is more hand motion and more elevation.

Hand swelling: Hand swelling is not usually related to a stroke, try elevating the hand above the heart when sitting for a couple of hours and see if that helps.
