Some ideas: Metastases in the liver can be massive enough to make the abdomen swell. If the bowel is obstructed or there is severe constipation, the abdomen may be distended. If there's involvement of the portal vein or fluid exudes from metastatic tumor, there may be fluid in the peritoneal cavity.

Depends where it is: Colorectal cancer can cause problems in three ways: 1) by causing blockage of stool leading to large bowel obstruction; 2) by spreading to adjacent organs or the liver, causing mass effect; or 3) spread to the lining of the abdominal cavity, causing malignant ascites. In addition, other causes of abdominal distention may be unrelated to the cancer, such as liver disease. See your physician.
