Orchitis: Acute painful swelling of the testis is usually due to descending infection from the prostate through the vas and epididymis. This is treated with long courses of antibiotics. I would suggest seeing a urologist. For exam and scrotal ultrasound to assure that abscess or infarction of the testis is not present.

6 weeks: I would say that 6 weeks is long enough. You want to make sure your testicle has not twisted and partially cut off the blood supply to the testicle as opposed to a testicular infection or even tumor. See your doc.
