A member asked:

Can an alcoholic be constipated because of not taking alcohol?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unlikely: If a person is dependent on alcohol, alcohol withdrawal will often cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Constipation would be unusual. If this is you, and your bowel habits have changed, it is good that you have stopped drinking alcohol, but i would recommend seeing your doctor for a full check-up and mention that your bowel habits have changed. It may require a full GI evaluation.
