Rarely if ever: Claritin (loratadine) is one of the antihistamines that is helpful due to its once a day dosing and resistance to crossing into the brain.Since it seldom crosses into the brain, it doesn't cause brain based changes in behavior like drowsiness or hyperactivity. Individual patients may show a selective difference or intolerance to any medication or the binding material within the product.

It's unusual, but...: It does happen. Typically, non-sedating antihistamines are well tolerated by children, and the more common side effect is modest sedation. That being said, I have cared for a few kids through the years who have had atypical responses to claritin-like medications. I wonder if tour child has the same response to Diphenhydramine (aka, benadryl).
