The liver: Hepatitis simply means inflammation of the liver. Many things can cause hepatitis, autoimmune disease, toxins including alcohol, fat, viruses (hepatitis a, b, c, d, e, g and other viruses), trauma including shock and lack of oxygen. In addition, some diseases of the bile duct can secondarily cause hepatitis since bile backup can injure the liver.
