He needs to find out: I'm going to assume that he practices decent oral hygiene with flossing, including his tongue. He may have a Zenker's diverticulum, a bean or something trapped in his nasopharynx, or some other food trap near his airway. He needs to get seen if he's going to survive socially and professionally.
