Acute?......: An acute cough, present for less than 3 weeks, is usually due to acute bronchitis, an infection of the airways. This leads to increased sputum production, which could account for the "rattling in the chest." if it is due to a bacterial infection, antibiotics are typically prescribed so see your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
