Volume increases: During pregnancy, the plasma volume (the fluid component of your blood) increases by 50% and the red blood cell volume increases only by 20-30%. So it is hard to say exactly how many "pints" it increases. It easier to describe as an increase in volume faster than the expansion in red blood cell volume. So measures of blood counts will show you to be anemic during pregnancy. This is normal.
