Rhomboids: You could have one of a couple things. It could be a rhomboid spasm, which is a muscle between your shoulder blade and spine and runs over your ribs between the two. The other issue you could have is a posterior or mildly displaced rib. Either way, the cough and forced expansion of your thoracic spine irritates the muscle or the posterior rib. Stretching, exercise, massage, and strengthening helps.
