Swollen Ankle: Swelling around the ankle can be from a variety of conditions. Recent injuries, such as sprains, can cause swelling. Tendinitis (inflamation of tendons) can cause it. In addition lower extremity swelling can be from heart or kidney problems as well.

Lipoma: If you did not previously injure this area, it may be a lipoma. It is very common, particularly for women to develop lipomas just below the lateral malleolus. These lipomas are not harmful. Tendonitis, arthritis, and residual sprains can also cause swelling in the area.
