A 32-year-old member asked:

how long does the person recover from basilar skull fracture?

2 doctor answers10 doctors weighed in
Dr. Stefan Chock
Trauma Surgery 22 years experience
6-8 weeks: The skull fracture itself will heal just like any other bone in the body and usually take 6-8 weeks. The actual symptoms however, may persist depending on the extent of injury to the underlying brain tissue.
Dr. Soren Singel
Neurosurgery 29 years experience
Relatively quickly: The fracture itself heals up within a few weeks. If there is additional brain injury from the impact that may take months to clear. Usually if the skull cracks it dissipates the impact energy so the brain may stay functional without obvious damage. If there is any cerebrospinal fluid leakage or inner ear damage associated with the trauma or fracture this may take longer to resolve (months).

What could cause clavicle fracture ?

Dr. John Ayres
Orthopedic Surgery 37 years experience
Trauma: Any trauma to the chest or a fall on an outstretched arm can lead to a fracture. If there is any disease that weakens the bone, e.g. Cancer or osteogenesis imperfecta, it can fracture more easily, but some sort of force still needs to be applied to break it. This is called a pathological fracture. A clavicle does not break without having some sort of force applied to it through abuse or injury.

Ankle joint fracture: A trimalleolar fracture means that the 3 corners (maleolli) that make up your ankle joint (tibia and fibula) are involved with the break. It usually results from high energy injuries and because the multiple parts are broken, the joint is unstable and typically requires surgery to restore the articular surface and stability of the ankle.

How is pain from a fracture treated?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Brandon Macy
Podiatry 41 years experience
First and foremost: The fracture has to be immobilized by a cast or splint. That alone will make things a lot better. After that, there are pain medications to help deal with the early days following the injury. The pain will ease up considerably, long before the fracture has completely healed.
