Not necessarily: If the cut is completely within the reddened "vermilion" of the lip, we often let it stay open unless it is gaping too much. The antibacterial action of saliva cleans it and it will often heal ok. If the cut crosses over into regular skin beyond the lip, a stitch is often needed to align the cut edges so the lip does not heal with a jagged border.
